It was a pleasure to be able to attend the 50th Annual Lampeter Stallion Show. I am sure it will be remembered for all the right reasons: I loved the catalogue which was full of photos and information about previous show winners, I love my commerative slate coasters which were awarded to all the competitors, but which were also available to purchase from the secretary. For me, it was a delight to see a judge without prejudice against chestnuts, I see so many classes where all the exhibits are bay, with a token black thrown in for good measure.
A serendipitous moment to see a young lad from Horeb called Sion Rees doing so well at his first show, I'm sure his and all the mums around the ring held our breath as he came round the ring for the first time, not that we needed to worry: he knew what he was doing. The supreme welsh cob was Horeb Tomboy (Horeb Euros x Winmark Ebrill Cawodi) foaled in 2000, the sire of both boy and stallion having done very well at the same show in the past - Horeb Euros having also been Champion Welsh Cob in 1992,1993 & 1996 as well as Supreme Champion in 1992 & 1996. But for 2011, the supreme exhibit was the Section C stallion, Yrallt May Day Surprise owned by the Simons Family and ridden by Maggie Simons, who seemed to be grinning with Peter Jones by her side everytime I got a chance to go over to the ridden ring (see photos below) winning all three ridden supremes over there before turning up in the big ring at the end of the day. Reserve Supreme went to the Bigleys Section B stallion Boreton White Prince, exhibited by Catryn Bigley. (photos also below)
Back to the Ds and it was the yearling filly Fronarth Golden Model who took the Yearling Championship, with the two year old filly Derwen Reason, taking champion filly. The impressive Drogeda Valentino (Trevallion Valentino x Drogeda Spring Rose), was champion colt and Supreme Youngstock exhibit (who knew David could move that well?) Congratulations to the owner, Sarah Hamer of the Cascob and Dorddu studs.
Supreme Yearling went to the section B colt Adagio De L'Aurore (Heniarth Wood-wind x Etincelle Ravignan) bred by Miss Delaitre and shown by Richard Miller of the Heniarth Stud with the Supreme Youngstock Exhibit going to the Denny's owner bred and exhibited, 2 year old section C colt Brascote Galaxy (Laurtom Glyndwr x Redpools Ginette) photos of both can be found in the gallery towards the bottom of the page) The Show in Harness was won by Croniarth Celtic Starlight exhibited by Clare Granger and George Mitchell (Snr) who despite his diminutive stature outshone the Section D exhibits and gave the judge and spectators a display that couldn't be ignored.
